Petrol prices in India are the third highest in the five-nation SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) region. As on May 1, petrol prices in India were at ₹63.16 a litre. This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Petrol prices were cheapest in Pakistan at ₹44.05 a litre, while they were highest in Bangladesh at ₹76.97 a litre.
However, diesel prices in India were amongst the cheapest in the SAARC region. Diesel is sold in India at ₹49.57 a litre, while it is priced at ₹44.29 a litre in Sri Lanka, the cheapest for the SAARC region. Diesel sells for the highest amount in Bangladesh and Nepal at ₹54.27 a litre.
