The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday laid emphasis on judicial reforms to stem corruption.
Addressing the Golden Jubilee lecture of the Indian Institute of Management- Calcutta, the Prime Minister said: “The creation of Lokpal as an institution will help. But it will not solve the problem. It needs to be supported by improvements in the pace and quality of judicial processes. This requires a number of judicial reforms.”
No single solution
Speedy trials and timely judgments would do a great deal to discourage corruption and dispel the notion that those who break the law can get away scot free, he felt. According to the Prime Minister, while corruption has to be tackled at all costs; there can be no single solution or a “magic wand” that can solve the problems at one go.
Reiterating the Centre’s willingness to debate on issues relating to amendments in the Lokpal Bill, he said that individuals concerned should convey their concerns to representatives in Parliament and the Standing Committee. The Lokpal Bill is currently placed before the Standing Committee.
“The Standing Committee has the power to propose any amendment. We are open to a reasoned debate on all these issues,” he said.
