Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to intervene to resolve the crisis in both Houses of Parliament.
In the various formal and informal meetings, the Opposition has maintained that the primary responsibility of conducting the proceedings lies with the Government.
Talks to end the impasse with the Opposition, involving the Rajya Sabha Chairman, the Lok Sabha Speaker and the leader of the Lok Sabha Sushilkumar Shinde will, however, continue in the coming days.
In one of such meeting, the CPI (M) suggested that the Prime Minister should take the lead and talk to the Opposition leaders. All Opposition parties, except the BJP, are ready to hear the Prime Minister’s explanation on the CAG reports, particularly on coal allocation.
The Prime Minister is learnt to have agreed to meet the leaders of Opposition of both the Houses and the NDA working chairman L.K. Advani to explain the Government’s position on the CAG reports.
Though the BJP is still standing by its position that only the Prime Minister’s resignation will ensure smooth running of the House, sources indicated that the party leaders may be ready to hear out the Prime Minister.
Opposition parties like the CPI(M), BJD and the JD(U) have already made it clear that they want the Prime Minister to make a statement in Parliament.
CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury said his party would take the next course of action depending on the Prime Minister’s clarification.
Parliament adjourned
Earlier, both Houses were adjourned on the third day without transacting any business.
Scotching rumours that its members were planning to resign en masse, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said it was the Congress that was spreading such baseless reports.
He said the party’s decision to walk out of the JPC meeting on Wednesday was on a different note.
If the JPC Chairman addresses our grievances, party MPs will continue to participate in the meetings, he said. The BJP wants the JPC to summon the Prime Minister and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, before it on the 2G issue.
