The Karnataka government will soon promulgate an ordinance, making one-year rural service mandatory for medical graduates, who have secured seats in medical colleges under government quota, in an attempt to ensure their services to rural areas.
The draft of the proposed ordinance is ready and expected to be issued in a couple of days, the Medical Education Minister, Mr A. Ramdas, told reporters here today.
While those MBBS graduates who refused to serve in rural areas would be slapped with a penalty Rs 10 lakh, the PG diploma holders would be fined Rs 15 lakh and post-graduates Rs 25 lakh, he said.
The Bill to replace the ordinance would be introduced in the next Assembly session slated to be held in July, he said.
Mr Ramdas said the government had decided to sell medicines to the poor and middle class at 50 per cent discount through Janata Bazaars in its hospitals.
