The West Bengal Governor, Mr M. K. Narayanan, on Monday, said that he had thought that the Singur Act did not require Presidential assent. “I thought we did not require Presidential approval. That was legal advice also,” the Governor told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Heritage School here. “Fine, if the High Court felt otherwise. What can we do?” he said. His comment come three-days after a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court struck down the Act as “unconstitutional and void”. The Court also held that the Singur Act required Presidential assent. The Singur Act, officially, known as the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, sought to reclaim land from Tata Motors Ltd.
