The Government is trying to evolve a consensus on commercial mining of coal as a part of the energy sector reforms,

Such a move will not only promote development of coal sector, but also spur competition and bring better pricing of coal domestically. This was stated by the Minister for Coal, Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal.

“The captive mining policy for augmenting domestic production has not yielded desired results for various reasons.

“Ideally, the coal sector should have been opened for commercial mining in line with the energy sector reforms that followed in the early nineties,” Mr Jaiswal said.

The Minister was speaking at the Energising India summit.

The commercialisation of coal would have helped in promoting competition and fixing of its prices. “However, this is yet to come through,” Mr Jaiswal said adding the Government is working towards a consensus on commercial mining.

A legislation in this regard is pending in Parliament.
