The Tamil Nadu Government has resolved to request the Centre to stop work on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project till the fears of the people in the region are addressed, according to an official press release.
The Cabinet meeting was convened today following a representation from the social organisations which had expressed concerns regarding safety of the nuclear power project coming up in Tiruvelveli.
Over 125 people had been on a hunger strike for the last 10 days demanding that the project be scrapped.
A delegation of protesters met with the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, on Wednesday to request that the State Government should intervene on their behalf. The Chief Minister had agreed to convene the Cabinet to move the resolution following which the protesters had decided to call off the hunger strike.
The resolution by the Cabinet reiterates the State Government's letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday, in which Ms Jayalalithaa had urged the Centre to stop work on the nuclear power project till the concerns of the people are addressed. The Chief Minister had also said in a delegation of political party representatives and social organisations led by the State Finance Minister, Mr O. Panneerselvam, will present a memorandum on the issue to the Centre.
