Taking a grim view of the upkeep of Chennai airport, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju, has called a meeting of the Airport Director and other senior officials here on Thursday.
The move comes after a surprise inspection by senior Ministry official revealed shortcomings in the newly modernised airport.
The decision to make a surprise visit to the airport was felt as several Members of Parliament cutting across party lines had complained to the Minister about the poor state of affairs at the airport. During the visit, the team found that the toilets were not clean, window panes were falling off and the food court was dirty, a senior official said.
The modernisation programme was undertaken by the Airports Authority of India with Vice-President Hamid Ansari inaugurating the modernised airport building on January 31. The modernisation of Chennai airport saw a cost overrun of over ₹2,000 crore.
