The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has admitted the petition of TNEB, the state electricity utility, for raising tariff across the board. The final determination of tariff will happen after the hearings are over.

For domestic consumers who consume more than 600 units every two months, the tariff is sought to be hiked from Rs 4.05 to Rs 5.75 a unit, eliminating the subsidy of Rs 1.70 unit given by the government today.

For commercial establishments, the proposed tariff is Rs 7 a unit. Currently, they pay between Rs 4.30 and Rs 6.50 a unit depending upon their consumption.
