The West Bengal Government has sought the termination of NHPC (formerly known as the National Hydro Power Corporation) as an implementing agency for the rural electrification project at the Purilia district of the State.

The rural electrification work in the area was being carried out under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) under the 11th Five-Year Plan.

Sources in the state power department said that work execution of the project (by NHPC) was slow.

Minister’s response

Replying to an ‘attention motion’ in the State Legislative Assembly, Power Minister, Mr Manish Gupta, on Wednesday, said that work at the NHPC project in Purulia was not satisfactory in the last six months.

According to Mr Gupta, despite several monitoring and review meetings at the district and state levels, execution remained slow. This was because of poor supervision by the NHPC.

Replacement

The State Government, Mr Gupta said, has sought to handover the implementation of the project to West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) instead.

WBSEDCL is currently involved in the execution of projects under RGGVY in 10 districts of the state.
