The West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution opposing domestic and foreign capital in multi-brand retail.
Citing the resolution as one which will soon be emulated by other States, the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: “After the resolution is passed here, other States will follow our example. The matter would then be taken up in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.”
It is however, not clear, whether the resolution will affect the operations of the existing big-format retail stores like Spencers, More and Food Bazaar.
According to Banerjee, her party, the Trinamool Congress, had moved a similar resolution before the House in December 2007 which was then defeated.
Meanwhile, Members of the Left Front walked out of the Assembly during the discussions in protests against rejection by the Speaker of their amendments to the resolution.
