There was no respite from the chill for the people of the capital as night temperature dropped further and was expected to plunge to lower levels over the coming days.
While the maximum temperature remained well below normal levels during the day time, the minimum temperature overnight fell down to 8.4 degrees Celsius, which is a degree above normal but over two degrees less than the previous day’s minimum.
In fact, the minimum temperature that has dropped four degrees over the past two days, is expected to go further down in the coming days.
The weather department has predicted a minimum of six and seven degrees for Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The maximum temperature yesterday dipped three degrees below normal at 18 deg C.
The city experienced the coldest day temperature on Friday with the maximum recorded at a low of 16.9 degrees Celsius.
Last month saw the minimum temperature come down to 2.9 deg C on Christmas morning, the lowest for the season so far.
In the past 11 years except for 2010, the month of January has recorded the lowest minimum temperature at below five degrees Celsius. The lowest in the past 11 years was on January 8 of 2006 when the mercury had dipped to 0.2 deg C.
The record lowest minimum for the month was recorded on January 16, 1935 when mercury touched minus 0.6 degrees Celsius while the record highest maximum was 32.5 degrees on January 28, 2004.
