With just five days to go for the commencement of monsoon session of Parliament, the Government has swung into action to decide on the legislative priorities for the upcoming session.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today met the chief whips of various political parties to seek their support for the upcoming session, official sources said.

The monsoon session begins on August 8 and is slated to end on September 7.

The chief whips today suggested that the Government should in the monsoon session take up discussions on drought situation in the country, recent power blackout, price rise, Maruti violence, death in Amarnath, fire in Tamil Nadu Express and other important issues.

On Wednesday, the Secretaries of various Ministries met Bansal and discussed the Bills that should be taken up in the upcoming session. In all, around 31 Bills are on the table, but the Government is yet to firm up the final list that would be taken up.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will hold an all-party meeting on Monday and discuss the agenda for the monsoon session, sources said.

Some of the non-economic Bills that could be taken up in Lok Sabha this session include the Women’s Reservation Bill and Whistleblowers Bill.

This year’s two-part Budget session, which commenced on March 12 and ended on May 22, saw 21 Government Bills introduced. More than 20 Bills were passed, including those relating to the Railway and General Budget.
