The first of the seven phases of polling for the 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh begins on February 4.
Ending suspense over the dates for holding elections in five State Assemblies, including Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission announced the polling schedule on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference, the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr S. Y. Quraishi, said the seventh and last phase of elections in UP will be held on February 28. Polling will also take place on February 8, 11, 15, 19 and 23 in the State.
Meanwhile, the EC announced that the 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab and the 70 constituencies in Uttarakhand will go to polls on January 30 while polling for the 60 seats in Manipur will be held on January 28. The electorate in Goa will cast its vote on March 3.
The size of the electorate varies from an estimated 11.19 crore in Uttar Pradesh to about a million voters in Goa. Similarly, Goa will have 1,612 polling stations, UP (1,28,112), Punjab (19,724), Uttarakhand (9,744) and Manipur (2,325).
Results on March 4
Counting of votes in all five States going to the polls will take place on March 4.
In a statement, the Commission has said that the model code of conduct comes into immediate effect. The polls in all the five States will be conducted at polling station using electronic voting machines.
To bring about greater transparency and for ease of monitoring election expenses, candidates will be required to open a separate bank account and incur their election expenses from that account, the Commission statement adds.
The Commission announced that every State going to poll shall have a complaint redress mechanism based on a Web site and a toll-free call centre (number 1950). “The URL of the complaint registration Web site will be announced for each State by the respective Chief Electoral Officer separately,” the Commission said.
