The Director-General of Police, Kerala, will decide on whether the two Italian marines need to be shifted from the central prison here to anywhere else.

The DGP will confer with the Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) before taking a decision, an official spokesman said here.

This follows a directive from the Supreme Court, acting on the basis of a specific petition filed by the Republic of Italy.

The court had asked the State Government to state its position on the request from the marines to be shifted from the prison to a facility in Kochi.

The marines, Salvatore Girone and Massmiliano Latorre, were arrested in connection with the shooting to death of two local fishermen from onboard an Italian vessel off the Kollam coast.
