The Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) is holding a three-day ‘Infrastructure Conference 2011’ here from tomorrow involving Cabinet Ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats, engineers and domain experts.

The conference will focus on the need for a paradigm shift towards modern technologies, superior construction techniques and efficient management for sustainable development of projects.

The event is being visualised as a game-changer in the State’s infrastructure sector, according to Mr V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, Minister for PWD.

Speaking to newspersons here, the Minister said the PWD, which spearheads the civil construction activities of the State, needs a total revamp with a view to imbibing technological and conceptual advancements and adopting them in an appropriate manner.

“In fact, the PWD shall look at providing leadership by rapidly adopting modern technologies,” he added.

The conference is structured in such a manner as to host eight technical sessions where at least 24 nationally and internationally renowned experts in various related sectors would share their invaluable experience. At least 175 selected delegates will be participating.

Among the topics being discussed include project conceptualisation and planning; investigation and data capture using modern technique; modern designing based on latest software; comprehensive safety measures; quality assurance programmes; and internationally accepted best practices in civil construction.

Each technical session will be followed by a brain-storming session that would throw up technical and policy question as well as original and creative response.

The proceedings would be compiled and sent as a Cabinet note for consideration for necessary policy action, the Minister said.
