The Food and Drug Administration in the State will undertake a month-long drive against milk adulteration from June 1, observed officially since 2001 as World Milk Day.
The zero-tolerance initiative against adulteration will involve stringent scrutiny of various dairies in the State. It will also take up a campaign to increase consumer awareness on the issue.
The entire milk chain from production, collection and chilling centres to dairies and retailers will come under the purview of the administration.
According to a recent survey, Maharashtra has the maximum number of instances of milk adulteration in the country.
Urea, sugar and cooking soda are among the common substances used to adulterate milk, while instances of addition of water into milk bags are also commonplace.
