Many States yet to notify RTE Act

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said only 13 States and Union Territories had notified the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) which completed one year of its existence on Thursday. The Act came into effect on April 1 last year.

The NCPCR, which is the monitoring agency for the Act, said only six States had notified the Act and framed model rules. These are Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and all UTs. The Chairperson of the Commission, Ms Shanta Sinha, said there were many systemic problems in the implementation of the Act.

Many States had cycle of elementary education from class I to VII against the RTE Act provisions of I to VIII.
