The Tamil Nadu Government has constituted a four-member expert committee to study the issues and concerns relating to Kudankulam nuclear power project.

The committee has been formed in line with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa's announcement in the Assembly on February 4. It will study the safety aspects, survey the feeling and concerns of the people in the region and make its recommendations to the State Government.

The Chief Minister had said in the Assembly that the State Government will decide on the further course of action on this issue once the report is submitted.

The committee consists of Professor M.R. Srinivasan, former chairman, Atomic Energy Commission; Prof. D. Arivuoli, Department of Physics, Anna University; Dr S. Iniyan, Professor and Director, Institute for Energy Studies, Anna University; and Mr L.N. Vijayaraghavan, a former IAS officer of the rank of Chief Secretary. Dr Iniyan will be the convenor of the committee, the release said.

The State Government's decision follows an expert committee constituted by the Centre, which had interacted with those demonstrating against the establishment of the Kudankulam atomic power project at Tirunelveli district.

This committee had organised meetings on November 8 and 18 and December 15, 2011, and responded to the concerns and fears raised regarding this project and submitted a 77-page report on the safety of the nuclear plant. The committee had again met on January 31, 2012, had submitted one more report and had said its role in this matter had been concluded.
