Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has multiple government schemes named after him, such as Atal Pension Yojana and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), will now lend his name to a smart building in the Capital.
A new office building being constructed to re-locate the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will be named after Vajpayee as Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has cleared a proposal for this.
“The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has proposed to name the new building as ‘Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan’. Since the Ministry of Urban Development is the authority for naming and renaming office buildings, Naidu has cleared the proposal,” a senior official in the Ministry of Urban Development told
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, which is facing acute space shortage at its present location, is coming up with the new building near CGO Complex in Delhi. The Ministry of Urban Development has allotted 2.76 acres for the construction of a new unified headquarters.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has finalised the green design for the building. “It will be built as a net zero building and will have a host of smart features such as Building Information Modelling (BIM),” a senior official in CPWD said.
Net zero building is one with zero net energy consumption, which means the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site.
BIM is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.
“The building will use renewable sources such as solar, to generate energy at the premises,” he added.
It will have the capacity to seat 600 people along with an auditorium and public places which will showcase renewable energy models to people.
Moreover, it has been designed to suit the environment of Delhi. “Its design is blended with adjacent buildings such as India Habitat Centre. It is being planned as a five-star GRIHA rating building,” the CPWD official added.
The award of contract will take six months and post that the construction will take at least 24 months, he added.
