There is no question of data leakage from the Aadhaar system, the government said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, after CPI(M) member MB Rajesh raised the issue of data security during Zero Hour, citing the case of cricketer MS Dhoni’s personal data being posted on social media recently.

“Demographic and biometric data cannot be leaked from the Aadhaar system at any cost,” said PP Chaudhary, Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Law and Justice.

Rajesh had flagged the issue of data security, adding that the government had itself confirmed this by writing to State secretaries urging them to ensure that personal details are not published. He also referred to a TV report that showed two numbers being generated for a single person.

Referring to the data leakage case of Dhoni, Chaudhary said the person concerned who went to Dhoni’s house for Aadhaar enrolment had put the picture on a social website and if the data was leaked from there, “it had nothing to do with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) or the Aadhaar system.”

The Minister said the Ministry had only sent an advisory to States that personal information, such as banking details and Aadhaar number, should not be published, even in the case of scholarships etc, adding that the “system was absolutely foolproof and leakage cannot be done and has not happened ever.”
