An expert committee will be formed to study the proposal of setting up a media city in Kochi, the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has said.
The media city will be modelled on the Dubai Media City. Besides modern facilities for media houses, it will have institutions for journalism courses and training, he said while inaugurating the new media centre at Ernakulam Collectorate.
The expert committee will be formed shortly and the government would take a decision after studying its report, he added.
Work this year
Mr K.C. Joseph, the State Information and Rural Development Minister, said work on the media city would commence in the current financial year. Though it will be modelled on the Dubai Media City, it will be tailor-made for Kerala's needs, he added.
The State government is also planning to open media centres in all district headquarters in a phased manner.
There are also plans to launch a television channel with the objective of disseminating information on the various welfare programmes of the government, Mr Joseph said.
