Lauding Union Housing Minister Ajay Maken’s efforts to accord infrastructure status to affordable housing, developers have called for extending it to the entire housing sector.

On Monday, the Housing Minister had asked mega cities such as Mumbai to revisit their policies on floor space index.

The Minister was addressing a programme on ‘governance of mega city regions’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Mumbai.

Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India national president Lalit Kumar Jain, said, “We are happy that the Centre has come half way through on the developers and customers’ demands for according infrastructure status to the housing sector to facilitate easy financing and other benefits and to give a much-needed boost to the most important need of a man after food and water.”

Jain said it was a good beginning and “we hope he will move further in a positive direction.”

REALTY REFORMS

Credai has also asked for declaring housing as an industry and creation of special housing zones with tax relief on the line of special economic zones.

The developers association has presented a plan to the Government outlining realty reforms covering banking and administration. It includes low-cost finance for affordable housing and speedy or single-window system of clearances and automation of the project clearance processes.
