Many hurdles still remain for industry: Rajshree Pathy

State governments should support the manufacturing sector by clearing roadblocks in land acquisition, bureaucratic hurdles and simplifying various processes, said Rajshree Pathy, Chairperson, CII Southern Region, and Chairman and Managing Director, Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals Ltd.

“State governments talk about single window clearance. But, on the ground many of the hurdles still remain,” she told select newspersons on Tuesday, ahead of demitting office as Chairperson of CII SR.

She said political will and commitment are required to accelerate the Make in India initiative.

The potential is here and now because nowhere else in the world can any investor get the kind of returns on investment as in India today, she said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be congratulated for starting the Make in India initiative and building momentum by going abroad and getting people to have confidence in India. Time is now for Indian industry to make a choice between being a flat curve economy and fast economy.

“This is the second wave of globalisation and development that is hitting us. We cannot miss the boat. The whole world is waiting to invest in India,” she said.

“Whatever criticisms there may be on Modi, I think he has done a great thing and his visionary initiative such as Make in India and Swachh Bharat needs to be commended. The CII has picked up these initiatives and gone across everywhere to put it into action. People everywhere are talking about Make in India and Swachh Bharat. Nobody can change this country in a short span of two to three years,” she said.

Pathy said that in Tamil Nadu, all investments are in and around Chennai, which is too congested. There is a need to develop Coimbatore and push investment in to cities like Tiruchi and Madurai, she said.
