The Tamil Nadu Government is expected to announce the much-awaited renewable energy policy within the next ten days, an official of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) has said.

Addressing a visiting Japanese delegation in a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mr K. Gururajan, an official of TEDA, said that the State Government was “very serious” about developing renewable energy.

The renewable energy industry, especially, the solar industry has been keenly awaiting the State Government's policy, particularly against the backdrop of the desire expressed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, to develop 3,000 MW of solar power capacity in the State.

The crucial part of the policy would be the price at which the State utility would buy solar power.

But the renewable energy policy would also encompass wind and biomass power.

Noting that Tamil Nadu had wind power capacity of over 6,000 MW, Mr Gururajan said that there was scope for a lot more. The State, he said, was also interested in offshore wind power projects.

Similarly, Tamil Nadu has potential for about 1,000 MW of biomass-based power projects. In contrast, the State has only 130 MW of biomass capacity.
