The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised farmers to cultivate the CORH 3 rice hybrid this sowing season.
The CORH 3 hybrid rice was released by the farm varsity in 2006.
Dr S. Robin, Professor and Head, Department of Rice, TNAU, said the university recommended cultivation of CORH 3 as its yield potential was 30 per cent higher than normal varieties and suitable for System of Rice Intensification (SRI) cultivation
Dr Robin also pointed out that this rice hybrid would be suitable in the Cauvery delta area, Thambirabarani and Periyar Vaigai command area. Around five lakh hectares are covered under rice during the Kuruvai season, he said.
CORH 3 matures in 115 days and gives an average yield of around 7,500 kg/ha . The yield can surpass 10,000 kg/ha with modern practices, said the rice expert, adding ‘under favourable conditions, a net return of more than Rs 50000/ha is possible from cultivation of this hybrid’.
The university is gearing up to sell CORH 3 seeds.
