The Tripura government has sought assistance of Rs 13,600 crore from the Centre to bail out of the financial crunch it is faced with, official sources said today.
The Chief Minister Mr Manik Sarkar, accompanied by the state Finance Minister Mr Badal Chowdhury, met the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his residence in Delhi yesterday and demanded the package to resolve the state’s acute financial crisis caused by alleged deprivation of funds by the 13th Finance Commission, the sources said.
The finance minister had argued in the past that if West Bengal could be given a special financial grant of Rs 23,600 crore, why Tripura should be deprived of such assistance to tide over the same problem.
During the last meeting of the National Development Council, the Chief Minister had taken up the issue with the Prime Minister.
