Former Karnataka Chief Minister Mr B. S. Yeddyurappa surrendered before the Lokayukta special court on Saturday evening, after the court rejected his bail petition.
Earlier in the day, the special court issued an arrest warrant against him in two cases relating to irregularities in de-notification of government land.
After his surrender, the court remanded Mr Yeddyurappa to judicial custody till October 22.
After his surrender and subsequent arrest, Mr Yeddyurappa was taken to Parappana Agrahara jail. Mr Krishnaiah Shetty was sent to this jail in the morning.
After high drama in the afternoon, Mr Yeddyurappa surrendered before Lokayukta judge, Mr N.K. Sudhindra Rao, who had earlier rejected his bail plea in two graft cases and issued an arrest warrant.
Mr Yeddyurappa was not present in the court when his bail plea was heard, and subsequently rejected, in the morning. He had sent a medical certificate saying he was suffering from back pain, but suddenly arrived to surrender before the court.
Mr Yeddyurappa's two sons — BJP Lok Sabha member Mr B.Y. Raghavendra, and Mr B.Y. Vijayendra — and son-in-law Mr R. Sohan Kumar were granted conditional bail. The three were also accused in the de-notification of government land cases.
The former Chief Minister is the first accused in two cases of illegal land de-notification for monetary gains. The cases were filed by two Bangalore-based advocates, Mr Sirajin Bhasha and Mr N.K. Balaraj earlier this year after the Governor, Mr H. R. Bhardwaj, gave them sanction to launch criminal proceedings against Mr Yeddyurappa and his kin for allegedly conspiring to de-notify land in and around Bangalore in return for monetary gains.
Mr Yeddyurappa's counsel Mr Ravi B Naik said he would be moving a bail application before the High Court on Monday.
