The National Power Highway will be created by 2014, linking various regional grids, to ensure smooth and uninterrupted transmission of electricity, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said.
He was speaking after dedicating the 440/220 KV Substation of Powergrid Corporation of India at Ealppully under the Palakkad Sub-station near here on Sunday.
The power highway will connect various regional grids in the country and make smooth transmission to meet the future requirements in an efficient manner, he said.
Referring to acute power crunch faced by Kerala because of depletion of storage in its hydel sources, Mr Shinde said an additional 50 MW of power would be immediately allotted to the State from the Central pool.
“This would help the state to tide over severe power shortage and avoid power cut,” he said.
The newly dedicated facility will improve power supply in the State, especially in northern districts and cater to the growing requirements of the industrial area in Palakkad district, Mr Shinde said and added that it would help Kerala draw enhanced share of power from new generating stations such as Simhadri-II, Tuticorin, Vallur and Kudankulam.
Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal and Kerala Electricity Minister Aryadam Muhammad were present on the occasion.
