Protestors against big dams in Assam are not allowing transportation of turbines to the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Power Project site at Gerukamukh in Assam's Lakhimpur district even as the Chief Minister, Mr Tarun Gogoi, said he is open for talks with the agitationists.
Protestors from 26 organisations with hundreds of local people here blocked the movement of trucks transporting the parts of the turbines to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) construction site on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
RTI activist and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) leader Mr Akhil Gogoi, spearheading the anti-big-dam protest, told reporters here today that under no circumstance would such mega dams be allowed to be constructed as “Assam is in the highest seismic Zone Five and the rocks here are Shivalik sandy rocks unsuitable for construction of mega dams.”
The Chief Minister said that he was open for discussions with the protestors if they approach him.
