The country has a record stock of foodgrains at 80.51 million tonnes as on July, more than double the buffer norm, on the back of record production and procurement of grains, the government said on Tuesday.
“The Central pool has record stock of foodgrains. As on 1st July, 2012, there was 80.51 million tonnes foodgrains in the pool against the minimum buffer norms of 319 lakh tonnes (31.9 mt),” an official release said.
Actual stock of the wheat was 49.80 million tonnes against the minimum buffer norms of 20.1 million tonnes.
Similarly, rice stock in the pool was 30.70 million tonnes against the buffer norms of 11.8 million tonnes, the statement added.
The government had a stock of 64 million tonnes on July 1 last year against the buffer requisition of 31.9 million tonnes.
Total amount of wheat in godowns on July 1, 2011 was 37.1 million tonnes against buffer norm of 20.1 million tonnes.
The same was 26.85 million tonnes for rice against buffer norm of 11.8 million tonnes last year.
