Retail FDI: NDA to decide strategy on Nov 20

Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, will meet on November 20, to finalise the strategy for the Winter Session of Parliament to begin on November 22.

NDA convenor Sharad Yadav said here on Thursday that the Opposition would co-operate with the Government for “meaningful” discussions on issues such as FDI in retail than disrupt the proceedings.

In an indication that NDA was divided on taking an aggressive position, the Janata Dal (United) has moved notices that do not entail voting to discuss FDI in retail.

While the Shiromani Akali Dal has endorsed FDI in retail, the BJP, along with other Opposition parties, such as the Left and the Trinamool Congress, is in favour of a discussion, followed by voting.

The BJP’s Parliamentary Board is also meeting the same day. Party leaders said a view on issues such as corruption, particularly the coal scam, would be taken.

BJP protest

BJP has decided to hold a one-day protest in the Capital and other major cities against the UPA Government’s policies. BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters here that demonstrations and rallies will be held in all State capitals against price rise, corruption, scams and FDI in retail.

“The UPA Government’s calculations on the ground and its arithmetic in Parliament have both gone haywire,” he said.

Left meet today

The leaders of Parliamentary groups of all Left parties are meeting here on Friday. The Left parties had maintained that they would work together with other parties to oppose FDI in retail.

The Left leaders had approached Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam Party, AIADMK and Biju Janata Dal for a joint floor strategy against the UPA Government during the winter session.

The Congress had said that it was confident of facing any challenges from the Opposition.
