Flipkart, Maruti Suzuki India, India-Yamaha Motor, Tata Motors, Cadila Pharma and Raymond Limited are among the 12 companies that have so far come forward to partner the Centre for skill development through industrial training institutes (ITIs), Skill Development Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He said courses covered are designed by the local industry, in partnership with ITIs and others, which are delivered by sharing existing infrastructure.

Mentor Councils

In addition, Mentor Councils have been set up, which will assist in designing courses for the ITIs and will include representatives from companies among the top 10 in each sector.

To link curricula to industry needs, technical support is being provided by core groups in each sector, guided by Central Staff Training and Research Institute, Kolkata and National Instructional Media Institute, Chennai. The Centre is also engaging with countries and has signed 16 MoUs with the US, the UK, Germany, France and Iran, among others, in the endeavour to skill its workforce, Rudy said in another written reply.

Apart from the private industry, “The National Skill Development Corporation and National Skills Development Agency have collaboration with foreign governments and institutions,” the Minister said, adding that the recently launched National Skill Development Mission also envisages active participation from State governments.

Skill India, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to provide training and skill development to over 40 crore youth by 2022.
