The State Government on Monday told the Calcutta High Court that Tata Motors had no interest in Singur land. Their only interest was in obtaining compensation.
Pointing out that the auto major has not sought for restoration of land, Mr Shaktinath Mukherjee, counsel for Principal Secretary of the State – Land and Land Reforms Department, said that Tatas were asking that the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, be declared “illegal and nothing more.”
He was arguing on Tata Motors petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Singur Act.
Meanwhile, Mr Justice I.P. Mukerji, who was hearing the matter, remarked that Tata Motors had asked for restoration of land and had wanted to defend their lease.
Speaking on issues relating to compensation, the State Government counsel argued that adequacy of compensation can only be questioned when the amount is illusory.
