The Trinamool Congres-led West Bengal Government will move Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s judgement on the Singur case.
A Division Bench of the High Court on Friday said the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, was “unconstitutional and void.”
The West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, reacting to the development said “the farmers would have the last laugh.” “We will stand by the farmers in Singur and they will get back their land,” she told reporters outside the State Assembly House.
She also wrote on her Facebook page: “Throughout my life, I have struggled for the cause of the farmers, working class, poor and under-privileged. Our commitment to be with them (and) will remain, whether I am in power or not. I will continue to fight for this cause. Finally, the people’s choice in democracy will prevail.”
In response to the judgement, Trinamool Congress MP, and counsel for the State in the case, Mr Kalyan Bandopadhyay, confirmed that the State Government would appeal against the verdict in the apex court.
The West Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Partha Chatterjee, said the State Government would remain committed to the interests of the “unwilling” farmers in Singur. “We are committed to upholding the interests of the unwilling farmers,” he said.
However, Mr Chatterjee denied comment on the verdict.
“We have not received the copy of the court verdict. The State Government will be able to act only after studying it,” he said.
