‘Vulnerable’ households with Aadhaar-linked bank accounts to benefit

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will on Saturday launch a new UID-based cash transfer scheme targeted at ‘vulnerable households’ of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

This Delhi Government scheme, called Delhi Annashree Yojana, will see direct cash transfer of food subsidy benefits to the Aadhar-linked bank accounts of such beneficiaries.

The direct cash will be transferred to those households who do not have a valid ration card.

In 2009, Delhi Government had, after a fresh survey (at

jhuggi-jhonpdi (shanties) and resettlement colonies), identified a special category of ‘vulnerable household’ list which comprised garbage collectors, rickshaw pullers.

New accounts — basic savings accounts — will be opened in the name of the senior-most woman of the identified ‘vulnerable household’. The accounts are being opened on the basis of two documents — UIDAI card and pre-printed Annashree Yojana forms, sources said.

6 PSU banks roped in

As many as six public sector banks are coming together to open Aadhaar-linked basic savings account for beneficiaries.

By December 15, about 14,000 new Aadhaar-linked basic savings accounts will be opened for this purpose, sources in the banking industry said.

The six banks are State Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Union Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India and Punjab National Bank.

The benefit of direct cash transfer will gradually be extended to other payments of various State Government departments.

The aim is to expand the coverage of the direct cash transfer to close to 3 lakh beneficiaries in the National Capital Territory.

Beneficiaries can operate their basic savings accounts through business correspondents (who will have micro-ATMs) and be available at 140 new specified centres.

Payments to beneficiaries will be routed through the gateway of National Payments Corporation of India.
