Tata Steel Managing Director H M Nerurkar today said the steel sector in the country is doing well as compared to rest of the world despite the slowdown.

He said the private steel major will be a 10 million tonnes (MT) capacity steel plant in this quarter.

“We are expecting to get all clearances in this regard by mid-January and would start trial run next month,” he said here during New Year celebrations at the company.

Following the completion of the Rs 18,000 crore expansion programme of its plant in Jamshedpur, Nerurkar said, the priority of the company will be to contain pollution at lowest end as well as the safety.

“We want pollution at its lowest end when we become a 10 million tonnes company and safety of our workforce as well as the community at large,” he said, adding that the company would ensure that all equipment required to maintaining pollution at lowest end are installed and maintained properly.

Nerurkar said the Indian steel sector was doing well despite the meltdown in parts of the world. The economic condition in European countries was still to look up, he said.

In sync with the domestic condition, Tata Steel recorded a saleable steel of 3,000 tonnes of long products in December last, he claimed.

Referring to the company’s Kalinganagar project in Odisha, Nerurkar expressed satisfaction over the progress.

He said, Tata Steel pumped in Rs 34,000 crore to set up a 6-MT plant in phases in Kalinganagar.
