Skill and salary gap will continue to motivate Indians to find jobs overseas. According to a report ‘India Salary Benchmark 2019’ released by global professional recruitment consultancy Michael Page, 62 per cent of job seekers are open to overseas work opportunities.
Speaking to BusinessLine , Nicolas Dumoulin, Managing Director at Michael Page India said, “India has been and will be an exporter of talent. Globally, there is a lack of talent however, Indian talent is positive about overseas opportunities.”
Explaining further, he said, “India has a shortage of candidates because the Indian economy has grown and so have companies. This has led to people getting pushed in positions, just by the mere fact that the company was growing, whether they have the skill sets or not, that didn't matter. The companies do not invest in talent development. There is lack of people development in India which is alarming.”
According to reports, India has more than 50 per cent of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65 per cent below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years. While there are several candidates available for a job, there are not many skilled candidates.
Michael Page focusses on mid-senior level recruitments in India and other countries. According to the recruitment agency chief, the salaries for mid-senior level is either at par or higher than the pay scale in developed markets. Salaries offered to mid senior level employees are slightly lower in comparison to global standards and technology has taken over lower level jobs.
However, Indian companies recruit several people on the lower level especially in the manufacturing industry. “In this case, it becomes difficult to compare developed and developing markets,” he added.
While there are initiatives like make in India undertaken by the Indian government, there need to be many more initiatives like this to avoid employability else, the youth of India could move towards criminality in tier-three and -four cities.
