The Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, today again came under attack in Parliament on the issue of alleged misuse of office by him in helping a local hotelier and for giving a statement outside Parliament.

There was uproar in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on the issue during Zero Hour when BJP members raised the matter.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm, 30 minutes ahead of lunch, amid uproar by BJP members who wanted the Prime Minister to respond.

The BJP had given a notice for taking up the issue during Zero Hour, but uproarious scenes were witnessed when it was not taken up.

The Left also raised the issue of Mr Chidambaram’s statement on Mullaperiyar Dam and its members came to the Well.

Earlier, BJP members had briefly disrupted Question Hour in both the Houses. In Rajya Sabha, the protest related to the hotelier’s case, while in the Lok Sabha, the members raised Mr Chidambaram’s alleged role in the 2G spectrum scam case.

Soon after the Rajya Sabha mourned the deaths in southern Philippines due to cyclone, Mr Chandan Mitra (BJP) raised the issue of Mr Chidambaram allegedly helping his former client, a charge that has been vehemently denied by the Home Minister.

Earlier, the Chairman, Mr Hamid Ansari, said a notice for Zero Hour mention has been accepted and the issue can be raised then.

In the Lok Sabha, Mr Chidambaram came under attack with BJP leader, Mr Yashwant Sinha, demanding that a privilege motion against the minister be accepted. He was strongly supported by many of his party members.

The Lok Sabha Speaker, Ms Meira Kumar, said: “I have received the notice. I will consider it and come back to you.”

Amid heated exchanges between Congress and BJP members, Mr Sinha sought the Chair’s permission to “place facts (regarding his notice) before the House” but Ms Kumar did not allow him to speak, saying he had not given any notice.
