BEML Ltd, a public-sector undertaking that manufactures heavy equipment, has received a contract to design, manufacture, and commission two high-speed trains, each having eight cars, for ₹866.87 crore from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.
These trains will be deployed on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, which is being developed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).
The cars are priced at ₹27.86 crore each, which includes design costs, one-time development costs, non-recurring charges, and one-time costs for jigs, fixtures, tooling, and testing facilities that will be utilised for all future high-speed rail projects in India,” it said.
The trainsets will be built at BEML’s Bengaluru rail coach complex, and are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026. The project marks a significant milestone in India’s high-speed rail journey, becoming the first indigenously designed and manufactured trainsets with a test speed of 280 km ph, the company said in an exchange filing.
Train features
The train will feature a fully air-conditioned, chair car configuration offer modern passenger amenities such as reclining and rotatable seats, special provisions for passengers with restricted mobility alongside onboard infotainment systems.
BEML operates in three verticals including Defence and Aerospace, Mining and Construction, and Rail and Metro. BEML has its manufacturing facilities located in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Mysuru, and Palakkad.
The shares of the company closed at ₹3,719.60 down by 0.29 per cent at BSE. It recorded a topline of ₹634.08 crore and a consolidated net loss of ₹70.03 crore for the quarter ended on June 30, 2024.
