Nearly 13 million subscribers have changed their service provider using the Mobile Number Portability facility since November 2010.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, maximum number of porting requests have come from Gujarat (12.98 lakh) followed by Maharashtra (10.32 lakh) till June 30. About 10.5 million subscribers had used MNP as on May 31.
MNP was first introduced in November in Haryana where 7.63 lakh subscribers have requested for porting. In the southern zone, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have the maximum requests.
Wireless Subscriber base
TRAI also said the total wireless subscriber base increased from 840.28 million in May to 851.70 million at the end of June, a growth of 1.36 per cent.
Of the total 851.70 million subscribers, only 594.77 million subscribers were active subscribers. The proportion of active subscribers is approximately 69.83 per cent of the total wireless subscriber base reported by the service providers.
Idea leads the tally with 92.48 per cent of its total user base in the active category. Bharti Airtel has 88.77 per cent while Etisalat DB is at the bottom with 34.84 per cent.
TRAI said the share of urban subscriber has marginally decreased to 66 per cent from 66.02 per cent whereas share of rural subscribers has marginally increased from 33.98 per cent to 34 per cent. The overall wireless tele-density in India reaches 71.11.
Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 554.75 million in May to 562.12 million at the end of June. Rural subscription increased from 285.53 million to 289.57 million during the same period. This shows higher growth in rural subscription (1.42 per cent) than urban subscription (1.33 per cent).
The urban wireless tele-density has increased from 154.18 to 155.96 and rural tele-density has increased from 34.13 to 34.58. Private operators hold 88.35 per cent of the wireless market share where as BSNL and MTNL, two PSU operators hold only 11.65 per cent market share.
Wire-line subscriber base declined from 34.40 million in May to 34.29 million at the end of June. The share of urban subscriber has marginally increased from 75.19 per cent to 75.29 per cent whereas share of rural subscribers has marginally declined to 24.71 per cent from 24.81 per cent.
