A Special Court on Friday rejected an application by former Telecom Minister, Mr A. Raja, to appear during the hearing in the Supreme Court on the 2G spectrum case and assist his counsel.
Mr Raja is an accused in the 2G case and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.
Mr Raja, in his plea, had said that he could explain several factual nuances in the case more clearly and thereby assist his counsel Mr Sushil Kumar in the apex court. Mr Kumar assured that Mr Raja will not escape from there and added that his client could be taken in a jail van. He also said that there will not be any security threat as the apex court is heavily guarded.
The Special Court said it did not find any merit in Mr Raja's application as all the accused in the case are already allowed enough time to have legal consultations with their lawyers on every date of hearing of the case (in the Special Court).
The Special Court also said there was no intimation from the apex court regarding Mr Raja's production before it.
Meanwhile, the arguments continued on the CBI's application to add a new charge of “criminal breach of trust by a public servant” against the accused.
This charge carries a punishment of life imprisonment or imprisonment up to 10 years. The hearing on this will resume on October 10.
