7.7% more PCs sold in Q1 2012 over Dec quarter on commercial demand

A spurt in commercial spending helped the Indian PC market grow 7.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the previous quarter. About 2.63 million units were shipped during the quarter, according to International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of market intelligence for the IT/telecom sectors.

“The growth in PC volumes is reflective of the rise in consumption levels and investment activity for PCs in the recent past,” Mr Kiran Kumar, Senior Analyst at IDC, said in a report. However, the assembled PC market continues to be reeling under pressure on the price front owing to a significant surge in hard disk prices and subsequent shift in consumer purchase towards portable PCs, he added.

The assembled PC market has dipped to 37.6 per cent of the overall desktop PC business in the quarter compared with 45.4 per cent in the same quarter last year.

“Commoditisation is driving growth into semi-urban markets, which have shown faster growth than metros. Vendors are focusing on high-margin products such as all-in-one desktops and small portables to maintain the growth momentum and margins,” Dr Adwaita Menon, Associate Research Director, IDC said.

Lenovo tops the table

Lenovo clinched the top spot in the India PC market with a 15.8 per cent market share in the quarter, followed by Dell in the second spot with 15 per cent share, and HP with a 14.9 per cent share, according to IDC.
