Online retail firm Amazon India said it will soon add more categories on its online marketplace. This includes home furnishings and kitchen appliances in a bid to grab more buyers during the festival season.

The company that forayed into the Indian e-commerce space in June said it has got good traction for existing 11 categories, including electronic products such as tablets and books. It has added four more categories on Thursday including toys and games, baby products, personal care appliances and healthcare devices.

“The sellers for our products have also gone up five times, from 100 to 500 and fraction of these sellers is small and medium enterprises that have less than three stores,” Amit Agarwal, Vice-President and Country Manager, Amazon India, told Business Line .

He said though the Indian online market is still in a nascent stage, it would introduce more categories from time to time to add value, as there is much scope for this industry in future.

Mobile & computers

The portal has at over nine million books and 70,000 products across these categories of various brands and 1.7 million eBooks that customers can buy, he said, adding that the company is getting tractions from both mobile and computer users.

“Lot of cross pollination in both channels are showing good traffic and we look forward to adding more and more features to our mobile offerings so that we can make it more convenient to our mobile customers,” he said.

Agarwal said as a global company, Amazon India’s long-term strategy is to broaden selection of products across broaden set of categories and find ways to lower the cost of doing business for the sellers.

This way, the sellers can pass on the savings to the end consumers by selling products in low prices and also offer reliable and fast delivery experiences, he said.

“Those are the three inputs we focus on – selection, pricing and convenience -- and we will continue to invest in these areas to make our customers’ experience better. If you do a good job, over time, customers will choose us,” he added.
