BlackBerry has declined to fund training of Indian security officials on the new interception system it has set up in the country.
BlackBerry had set up a server in Mumbai for enabling law enforcement agencies to access data on BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry Internet Services.
This facility will be taken over and managed by Indian security agencies. However to do this, security officials would need training. While BlackBerry has agreed to provide the training at its headquarters in Canada, it has declined to finance the travel and accommodation expense.
According to top DoT officials, a new request will be made to the company. Meanwhile, the system, set up by BlackBerry, has been found to be working satisfactorily by the security agencies barring minor glitches. For instance, security agencies are not being able to access data flowing on older versions of BlackBerry operating systems. The two public sector companies MTNL and BSNL also have not yet linked up to the server set up by the handset maker.
