Research in Motion (RIM) is looking at expanding its presence in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The BlackBerry maker plans to increase its points of sale to 8,500 from 5,500 by this year-end.

At present, RIM has its presence in 250 towns in India and plan to increase this to 325 towns by the year-end. “We are focussing on increasing penetration in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Much of our expansion will be in these cities. We have tied up with zonal distributors and operators to bring out offers which will attract conversion. Region-specific telecom operators are also coming out with new offers,” said Mr Amit Mathur, Director, Sales, Research In Motion India Pvt Ltd.

With aspirations increasing and devices getting cheaper, RIM is promoting BlackBerry “much more” in the smaller towns and cities. They are also looking at increasing distribution centres and In-Shop Demonstration (ISD) centres.

At present, RIM has 529 experience zones, 68 exclusive stores and two premium stores.
