The Ilanthaikulam integrated IT Park, a special economic zone, promoted by the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot), in the outskirts of the city in an area of 28.91 acres, was declared open on Saturday by the Chief Minister Mr M. Karunanidhi, through videoconferencing from Chennai.
The Chief Minister also declared open the IT Park at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli and the State Data Centre at Perungudi near Chennai. The Chief Minister said the Government has taken efforts to promote IT parks in tier II towns in the State and the Ilanthaikulam IT Park and the other Vadapalanzhi IT park, proposed near Madurai-Kamaraj University in an area of 245.71 acres, is expected to attract an investment of over Rs 1,400 crore in the next five years and provide direct employment to 50,000 persons and indirect employment to one lakh people.
