Lenovo, the world's third largest personal computer maker, has become the latest entrant into the fledging tablet PC market in India.

Lenovo has unveiled its family of tablets – IdeaPad Tablet K1 for consumers, the ThinkPad Tablet for business customers and the IdeaPad Tablet A1 for small and medium business.

Cost of tablets

The tablets are priced between Rs 14,990 and Rs 46,900.

Lenovo is ventured into the Indian tablet space at a time when a host of multinational and local players such as Apple (iPad), RIM (Playbook), Samsung (Galaxy), Motorola (Xoom), Reliance Communications (Reliance 3G tab) and Beetel (Magiq) among several others, are vying for the customers wallet.

Last week, the world's cheapest tablet PC named Aakash, priced at just Rs 2,276, was launched by the Indian Government as part of its programme to expand education among students through information technology.

However, Mr Amar Babu, Managing Director of Lenovo India is not perturbed.

“We are just at the beginning of what is set to be a long history of tablets and hence we did not want to rush into it. Our strategy is to create a family of tablets suited to various entertainment and mobility requirements,” he told newspersons on the sidelines of a launch event where bikers performed stunts.

These tablets will be available in all of the 700 exclusive Lenovo stores and its retail partners by this month-end. The company has set a target of having 1,000 exclusive showrooms in India by the year-end, added Mr Babu.

App shop

Users of Lenovo's tablets will also have access to applications in the Lenovo App Shop -- which features popular applications that have been tested specifically for Lenovo IdeaPad and ThinkPad Tablets, according to a press release.
