Industry body Nasscom is working with the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry to stop hiring people who fake their curriculum vitae (CV).
The information technology (IT) industry, especially in the BPO sector, has had many instances of such fraud CVs in the past. Such people have been hired not only at a junior level, but also in the senior positions.
Recently an IBM employee was found using his wife’s academic qualifications to get a job paying more than Rs 20 lakh annually.
Project team
The Nasscom project team comprises Pari Sadasivan, Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer, IBM Global Process Services; Mohit Thukral, Senior Vice-President and Head of global financial services, Genpact; and Amit Jagga, Talent Acquisition Leader, IBM.
Companies taking part in the project are IBM, EXL, Genpact, Quattro, RBS, Infosys, Wipro, WNS, HCL, Convergys, GE Money, Fidelity, MetLife, National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and Accenture.
Nasscom and IBM’s locations are acting as project offices and the other companies will collaborate as a team on specific actions. For example, Nasscom and NSDL are working as a team to make National Skills Registry (NSR) a more potent tool. Genpact and EXL are working on processes to accurately profile candidates.
NSR is a Nasscom initiative started in 2007. It aims to be a robust and credible information repository of all those working in the industry. It develops a trusted and permanent fact sheet of information about each professional along with background check reports.
Though it was set up five years ago, fraudulent CVs still circulate. The industry expects a rise in fraud and misrepresentation, especially during the downturn in the economy.
Growing registrations
“We have taken up the task and are addressing it ourselves so that young people are not misled through such unscrupulous means,” Som Mittal, President, Nasscom, said.
According to Nasscom, there has been 90 per cent growth in NSR in last three years. There has been cumulative registration of 1.1 million people as of March 2012 and 40 per cent of the IT workforce is now covered under this.
Cumulatively biometric profile has grown from 513,000 in 2009-10 to 731,000 in 2011-12. Close to 125,000 background records have been already uploaded. Biometric profile has been completed for 25 per cent of the IT workforce and there are 117 companies registered with NSR.
Digitisation
The industry is also planning to digitise all the CVs for the benefit of companies under this project so that the backgrounds of each employee can be checked if one leaves a BPO and joins another, Promod Bhasin, Vice-Chairman, Genpact, said.
