The Supreme Court on Thursday said there is no justification to appoint a group of persons to directly or indirectly supervise the investigation being conducted by the CBI and other agencies in the 2G case.
It was acting on a plea by the NGO the Centre for Public Interest Litigation for setting up a Special Investigation Team to monitor the CBI probe into the 2G spectrum case.
The apex court said the CBI – during its investigation – shall file its reports before the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) in sealed envelopes.
It noted that though, initially the CBI may not have taken up the matter relating to investigation of 2G case with the requisite seriousness, after December 16, 2010 (when the Supreme Court started monitoring the case) it has satisfactorily conducted the investigation.
However, due to the involvement of the large number of influential persons in the case, the court asked the CVC and the Senior VC to assist it in effectively monitoring the further investigation of the case.
The apex court said the CBI should continue its investigation without being influenced by the Supreme Court observations.
